One-On-One Sabbatical Coaching

Use your sabbatical to gain clarity about what comes next

Personalized support for academics taking a sabbatical or an informal break from work. Use this opportunity to reflect, reset, and return with greater clarity and purpose.

Sometimes the best way forward is to step away for a while.

Most of us are taught to keep moving forward in our work. But constant momentum can make it difficult to notice when something in our work or life no longer feels sustainable, meaningful, or aligned.

A sabbatical or intentional break creates space to step out of that momentum long enough to reflect, reassess, and connect with what matters.

That’s the foundation of my one-on-one support, which focuses on helping academics make decisions around personal and professional sabbatical goals, workload, travel, creative or personal pursuits, and mindset work. I encourage intentional, structured yet flexible plans that fit where you are in work and life.

Who this is for

You have a sabbatical coming up and you want to make the most of it, professionally and personally. Maybe you’re feeling the need for a reset or change. Or you’re unsure of what you want from your next chapter of academic work. Or you’re feeling burnout and want to navigate through it during your time away. Or you’re feeling great about your work but seeking support in planning sabbatical-related travel, or guidance in balancing work and personal pursuits while away. Just knowing you want to use this time intentionally is all you need to start working with me.

How it works

Our work is tailored to what you need, whether your sabbatical starts in six months or it’s about to begin. We’ll start by clarifying your goals and what matters most to you in this chapter of work and life. We’ll use these insights to develop a roadmap for our work together, ensuring I can support you in the best ways possible. Includes six one-hour conversations; ongoing email support; access to a private resource library with videos and tools to support your sabbatical; and custom reflective exercises for clarity and decision-making.

What you’ll gain

Greater clarity about what you need from this period of work and life. A more intentional approach to your sabbatical. Space to think through decisions without rushing them. Perspective on what’s worth carrying forward, and what isn’t. An understanding of what matters most to you in work and life moving forward. Support from an academic who understands the value of stepping back to see meaning and purpose more clearly.

Why I do this work

I’m Liz, a professor who believes in the benefits of stepping back from work to move forward. Over time, I’ve found that pushing harder in my work (and life) didn’t help me connect with what mattered. What helped was creating intentional space through sabbatical, travel, and reflection. These experiences have shaped the way I approach working with others in shaping their sabbaticals.

Common Questions

Working with me is centered around regular one-on-one sessions (live via video, typically every other week) over three months, with space between to reflect, explore, and apply what we discuss. Our first live session will be a deep-dive to set intention for your time away, and it’ll set the direction for our time working together. In addition to live sessions, you’ll have email support from me between our meetings for check-ins, questions, and decision support. You’ll also have access to my private resource library with videos on topics such as personal and professional goal setting, logistics and boundaries, redefining productivity on sabbatical, community and accountability, and more.

You need to know you want time away, and that you want to use that time away intentionally. Everything else, we can figure out as we go. It’s common to begin this process simply knowing you want space, change, or time to reassess through a sabbatical. That said, if you already have plans in motion but are seeking one-on-one support, I’ll meet you where you are and work with the plans you’ve already created.

Ideally, we start working together before your sabbatical begins so you can approach the time with clarity and intention from the start. But in-sabbatical coaching is also helpful as you adjust to and navigate through your time away. If possible, we’ll set things up so our work together bridges both of these periods, but we can work to create a plan that works for you. If you’re not sure when to get started, book a free call with me (see below) and we’ll talk about timelines.

Yes. You can choose to pay in full ($1,800) or split into multiple payments, and if your employer allows, you can also pay with research, grant, or professional development funds. I know this is a significant investment. A sabbatical is an investment – in your work, your life, and yourself. If price is the main thing standing in the way of working with me for your sabbatical, please reach out. I’m happy to discuss a payment schedule that may make working together possible.

Absolutely, 100%. All of our conversations and any information you share with me along the way are confidential. This is a space to think openly about work, life, identity, and change without workplace dynamics, expectations, or outside pressures. What you share stays private.
