One-On-One Sabbatical Coaching

Create space to step back and figure out what’s next

Personalized support for those considering a sabbatical, career break, or intentional time away from work. Together, we create space for reflection and perspective, so you can approach your next chapter intentionally.

Sometimes the best way forward is to step away for a while.

Most of us are taught to keep moving forward in our work. But constant momentum can make it difficult to notice when something in our work or life no longer feels sustainable, meaningful, or aligned.

A sabbatical or intentional break creates space to step out of that momentum long enough to reflect, reassess, and reconnect with what matters.

That’s the foundation of my one-on-one coaching. I help people think intentionally about time away from work – whether that’s a formal sabbatical, a self-designed career break, or a smaller period of intentional space – and how to use that time meaningfully.

One-on-One Sabbatical Coaching

Who this is for

You may be considering a sabbatical or career break. Or feeling the need for a reset or change. Maybe you’re unsure of what you want from your next season of work or life. Or you might already be preparing for upcoming time away and are seeking guidance as you try to approach sabbatical more intentionally. You don’ need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Just knowing you want to use this space for greater clarity and direction is all you need to start.

How it works

This is personalized support built around your situation, goals, and constraints. This might involve helping you plan your sabbatical, navigating questions about work, identity, or direction, or building reflection and perspective into your time away – or a combination of all of these. Our first session will set the direction. Over three months, you’ll have six live sessions, on-demand email support for check-ins and questions, plus guides and resources for planning and reflection.

What you’ll gain

Greater clarity about what you need from this period of work and life. A more intentional approach to your sabbatical or career break. Space to think through decisions without rushing them. Perspective on what’s worth carrying forward, and what isn’t. Support from someone who understands the value of stepping back to see more clearly.

Why I do this work

I’m Liz, a professor, writer, and sabbatical coach who believes we need healthier ways to step back and reassess our relationship with work.

At different points in my own career, I’ve found that pushing harder wasn’t helping me reconnect with what mattered. What helped was creating intentional space through sabbatical, travel, and reflection.

These experiences have shaped the way I approach coaching today.

Common Questions

Working with me is centered around regular one-on-one sessions (live via Zoom, typically every other week) over three months, with space between to reflect, explore, and apply what we discuss. In addition to live sessions, you’ll have email support between our meetings for check-ins and on-demand question or decision support. I’ll also share guides and resources with you for sabbatical planning and deeper reflection on identity and work clarity.

You need to know you want time away, and that you want to use that time away intentionally. Everything else, we can figure out as we go. You can begin this process simply knowing you need space, change, or time to reassess through a sabbatical or self-directed career break. That said, if you already have plans in motion but are seeking one-on-one support, I’ll meet you where you are and work with the plans you’e already started.

Coaching for sabbaticals can be helpful at many stages. Ideally, we start before your sabbatical begins so you can approach the time with more intention. But in-sabbatical coaching is also helpful for added support as you adjust to and navigate time away. Ideally, your coaching bridges both of these periods, but we can work to create a plan that works for you. If you’re not sure when to start with coaching, fill out the form and we can set up a quick (free) call to discuss options.

Absolutely. All of our conversations – and any information you share with me along the way – are confidential and judgment-free. This is a space to think openly about work, life, identity, and change without workplace dynamics, expectations, or outside pressures. What you share stays private.
